Yeah yeah. I know it should be “garnered.” But we LUPEC ladies do love our garnish.

Nonetheless, enjoy these gems I’ve stumbled across lately:

Imbibe magazine rates absinthes
Get your green fairy on with one of these fine beverages. It seems price doesn’t always equal quality. But it doesn’t hurt.

CHOW features raw egg cocktails
As we know, the raw egg white in the pink ladies we enjoyed at Pink-A-Rama didn’t kill us. In fact, they added a nice body and a little froth to our cocktails. Perhaps Widow’s Kiss Karen will offer up some Ramos Gin Fizzes for our February / Mardi Gras meet?

November Meet – The spice must flow! November 19, 2008

Our November meet was all about the warm, comfy feeling spices lend – especially during the holidays. To switch things up, we conducted this meeting as a demo. Rather than discuss a historical topic, we made something essential to many classic cocktails – simple syrup. Not just any old syrup, but five spice syrup.

Szechuan peppercorns could not be located. So we subbed in allspice.

For drinks, we had hot toddies and hot spiced cocoa (non-alcoholic). Plus we had a freshly-baked garam masala spiced loaf of pumpkin bread to nosh on. It being Phoenix, the weather was still nice enough to sit on the patio and shoot the breeze.

Now that the holiday season is upon us, we’re taking a break until the new year. See you in January!

Seems that Summer made us sag a bit. But as the triple digits slip away, we’re revving up again. We kicked off the season with a meet at the Ruby Room, where the theme was The Depression. We thought it was fitting, given the current economic climate.

Member new (hey there Jacklyn!) and old gathered to kvetch about hard times, look back at the BIG Depression, and enjoy some Depression era cocktails. They included:

The Manhattan (home of Wall Street)

The Pick-Me-Up (we sure could use one!) and the Clover Leaf (for good luck.)

Manhattan
2.5 oz rye or bourbon (we used Maker’s Mark)
1 oz. sweet vermouth
2 dashes bitters

Pick Me Up (proportions estimated)
1/2 oz. Lemon juice
1 tsp. Sugar
2 oz. Bonded Whiskey
1/2 oz. Absinthe

Shake with ice and strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice and top with soda.

Clover Leaf Cocktail
1 lime
2 tsps grenadine
1 egg white
1 1/2 tsp dry gin

Shake well with cracked ice and strain into 4-ounce cocktail glass. Serve with mint leaf on top.

We also fawned over the award we received from Network of Strength (formerly Y-Me), and started making plans for Pink-A-Rama II.

To herald our third at-home meet, we went with a full-on tiki-themed pool party! We learned about famous women of Polynesia (real, mythological, and those in-between), swam, and tasted the fogcutter, Don the Beachcomber’s original zombie, and the Singapore Sling.

Wow, did they pack a punch! I think, by far, the favorite was the Singapore Sling. (Since it had about 15 different ingredients, it had better be!) Luckily, we had all afternoon to lounge by or in the pool to let it wear off.

In lieu of our May meet, we did the Y-ME Walk to Empower. We had a team 8 members strong, and we raised over $1000. Go, us!

In addition, it was just a good time, and we got to work on our fitness some. Can’t wait until next year!

How much fun was that? Karen / Widow’s Kiss hosted our second at-home meeting in her lovely home. It was a perfect day to enjoy the patio and the green grass. Such a treat, here in the desert.

We also learned about some famous widows and their drinks. Karen’s namesake was a golden, complex cocktail that required a long time to savor and to disassemble the dozens of flavors it held.

Jackie O’s favorite cocktail — the original daiquiri — was a definite group favorite. Unlike the frozen, super-sweet version of today, the old version was light, citrusy, and crisp. In fact, they went down a little too easy.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable day, and we can’t wait to do it again!

That’s right folks, we’re having a Saturday meeting this month. So you can have a little more tipple, without worrying about workday effects.

Not only that, it’ll be our first home-hosted meet! Our very own Widow’s Kiss (love the new name!) AKA Karen, is welcoming us into her home for a chat, and some lovely bevvies.

We’ll also be working on some stuff for next month’s Y-ME walk. Don’t forget, to sign up for the team, or to donate, just go here.

Since this is a home meeting, RSVPs are required, in order to get the details on where exactly. If you are interested in attending, please email lupecphx@yahoo.com.

Oh, and hey, wasn’t last month’s meet fun? Thanks again to the Ruby Room for hosting us. Too bad about the mint juleps. They were a bit mouthwashy.

‘Til we meet again, cheers!

We’re having a meet n’ sip! Come to the Ruby Room at 3pm, and we’ll chat about what’s going on in our lives, and what LUPEC Phoenix is planning for the coming months. Plus, as always, we’ll sample some tasty cocktails.

As far as a theme goes, I’m taking the easy way out and claiming it a “Show n Tell.” That’s right, just like in grade school.

Bring with you whatever strikes your fancy: an old photo, an embarrassingly bad poem you wrote in the 8th grade, the book you’re reading right now, a nifty kitchen gadget, a shotglass you stole from a bar, a knickknack off your desk — whatever!

If you’re interested in attending, simply email lupecphx@yahoo.com — or just show up.

See you Sunday!

Start stretching, and grab your sippy-cups! March 27, 2008
